About Ngaliwurri-Wuli Aboriginal Corporation

Timber Creek is located on the Victoria Highway approximately 600 kilometres south-west of Darwin, in an area known for its scenic escarpments and recreational fishing.

The Ngaliwurru-Wuli Aboriginal Corporation (NWAC) was formed over 35 years ago under the NT Associations Act to serve as an Outstation / Homelands Resource Centre, servicing homelands communities in the Big Rivers Region west of Katherine. NWAC’s footprint covers the region from Menggen (SW of Katherine) to Brumby Plains on the NT / WA border.

NWAC is CAL registered and provides support to homeland outstation residents through building and asset maintenance, including essential services such as power, water and sewerage. NWAC applies for and receives contracts through various NTG Departments to undertake infrastructure construction and maintenance on NTG assets in the region.

NWAC also performs other Civil and Construction work to government departments and work for the public in general. NWAC’s staff include carpenters, plumbers, painters, steel fabricators and an electrician.

Overview

The CEO manages the business of NWAC in such a manner as to ensure that its policies are implemented, and that delivery of services to its member communities are efficiently carried out. The CEO is responsible for financial accountability, adherence to legislative requirements and the promotion of community development and self-management.

The CEO assists the board in the development of strategic plans and budgets, governance (including monthly board and community meetings), major projects, and working with the board to ensure the strategies are implemented to maintain the sustainability of NWAC.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Work in conjunction with Board of Directors to promote community development and self – management.
  • Develop plans and priorities in conjunction with the Board of Directors for future activities and services.
  • Identify sources of funds to support future initiatives
  • Advise Board of Directors on legislative requirements
  • Advise and seek instructions from Board of Directors re Corporations Policies and Procedure issues
  • Provide advice and support to the President and elected members of the Board in relation to their roles and responsibilities
  • Report regularly on works, services and activities and any negotiations which may be occurring with outside bodies on the Board’s behalf

Financial management

  • Oversee the preparation of budget estimates and financial reports in compliance with NWAC CEO and Board requirements.
  • Ensure that financial records are accurate and up to date.
  • Review budget regularly and monitor accordingly.
  • Maintain appropriate internal financial controls so that any problems can be quickly detected.
  • Ensure that all NWAC assets are registered, secured, maintained and insured.

Staff management

  • Assist Board to recruit staff from the local community wherever possible.
  • Identify the training needs of staff and negotiate with funding bodies and training providers for the delivery of training.
  • Manage and motivate staff towards achieving efficient standards of service delivery.

Administration

  • Prepare reports and submissions for the Boards consideration
  • Establish and maintain appropriate information systems
  • Develop and maintain a Procedures and Policy Manual for staff
  • Ensure efficient administration and supervision
  • Meet with official visitors and other representatives

WHS

  • Promote a Health and Safety culture within the business.
  • Raise and report any or potential hazard or incident in the first instance with the Board
  • WH&S compliance – observe all work health & safety and company policy & initiative requirements to contribute to a safe, healthy and ethical workplace
  • Ensure you have contributed to the consultative process by advising of any past, present or potential WHS risks

Compliance

  • Demonstrate 100% compliance with any relevant government legislation
  • Be fully conversant and compliant with all company Policies and Procedures
