Chief Executive Officer – Wirrimanu
The Wirrimanu Aboriginal Corporation (WAC) is seeking applications for this important position, pivotal to the well-being and future social and economic development of the remote and independent Balgo community.
WAC is situated in and manages the remote Balgo Aboriginal community in the East Kimberley of Western Australia, approximately 250 km from Halls Creek. Balgo is a well-established community with a floating population of around 400 people; predominantly Kukatja, Ngardi, Djaru, Warlpiri, Walmajarri, Wangkajunga, Pintupi and Ngaatjatjarra. The residents have strong ties to the Sandy Desert and Tanami Desert regions.
The Balgo Community was established as a Catholic mission in 1939 and has a police station with two full-time police officers; a health clinic; Catholic Education school; a community owned store (Wirrimanu Community Store); a youth program and the internationally acclaimed Warlayirti Art Centre. WAC’s main sources of funding are Commonwealth and State Government grants and income generated by community-owned enterprises.
A highly skilled manager is being sought to assist this strongly culturally based community respectfully and professionally continue moving towards economic independence, while holding on to their distinct cultural identity. This will include assisting the Board of Directors, address diverse and complex matters affecting the communities future social and economic development within a region that potentially offers many advancement opportunities, including tourism.
The preferred applicant will possess all the technical skills, knowledge and experience required to successfully manage the municipal services and diverse organizational operations of this self-managed community. They will also demonstrate a deep commitment to the advancement of the Balgo community and its members.
The CEO:
• Is the principal staff member and carries overall responsibility for the successful day to day management and operation of WAC, including delivery of municipal services the Wirrimanu Community Store and several community initiatives.
• Is responsible for assisting the Council with strategic planning, identification and accessing of financial and other resources, implementing, monitoring, and reporting on the success of municipal services and other program delivery within Balgo, and
• As required and directed, represent WAC and its Council in meetings with government, industry, and the public.
A job share arrangement will be considered on 13.5 weeks on and 12.5 week off basis, if two applicants are compatible and this provides the best option.
