About Kunawarritji

Kunawarritji (Well 33) was established in the early 1980s by a group of Martu people from Punmu. It is located approx 810Km (mostly unsealed) south-east of Port Hedland. The current population is made up primarily of Martu people, consisting of approximately 115 people. As the community is of cultural significance to all Martu people in the western desert, the population can increase up to 1000 during cultural business.

Punmu and Parnngurr are the other large Western Desert communities situated 165 km and 230 km west of Kunawarritji respectively. The Kunawarritji community frequently interacts with these and other communities in the area.

Fuel (diesel and Opal) and a wide range of supplies are available from the store.

Position Summary and Objectives

Work under limited direction of the Board to manage and lead the organisation staff and operation to deliver cost effective, compliant, and efficient services to the Community as per the directions provided by the Board and any contract in place.

Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Operational Performance

Ensure the organisation delivers the required municipal and contracted services to the Kunawarritji Aboriginal Community as per the Board of Directors direction and contract requirements. Oversee the development and implementation of the KAC strategic and operational plan. Engage and manage professional external advisors to assist KAC to carry out their functions and achieve their objectives.

Organisational Compliance

Maintain overall responsibility for corporate compliance and development. Ensure Organisational Policies, processes and guidelines are developed as required, implemented and reviewed biannually. Ensure all safety requirements for the staff and the community are met. Maintain accurate records as required.

Strategic Direction

Provide high level strategic and operational advice to the KAC boards. Provide direction in the development and operation of projects and programs.

Staff Management

Oversee the Recruitment and Selection of all staff and ensure all staff have current contracts reflecting current authorised terms and conditions. Monitor performance and conduct formal Inductions, Probation and Performance reviews. Manage underperformance in a timely manner as required Oversee compliance with employment legislation and keep up with changes.

Financial Management

Compile Annual Reports and oversee that regular Communications are issued. Consult with Accountant, Bookkeeper and Auditor to prepare and present financial statements as necessary. Compile and recommend a yearly budget for approval. Subject to direction of the Entities Boards, control all expenditure by Entities. Work to secure ongoing resources and funding for the operations of the Entities.

Board Administration and Compliance

Support the operation and administration of the KAC Board by: Consulting with the Chairperson/s and overseeing preparation of the Agenda for Board meetings. Overseeing the preparation of all meetings including meeting notices, agendas, logistics, Board papers and minutes of the different entities. Ensuring resolutions made by the Board are properly implemented. Managing Directors’ training and transitions including induction. Ensuring compliance with the various constitution, trust deeds and rule book. When requested, representing the Chairperson/sand Boards at all levels of Government and at community forums to promote the aspirations of the Entities

Teamwork and Relationships

Lead all staff by example to ensure supportive, cooperative and positive relationships within the Kunawarritji staff, Board and other external agencies. Respect all aspects of local Indigenous culture, language and ceremony Ensure that KAC and their mission and services are consistently represented in a positive light to establish and maintain effective working relationships with external stakeholders. Maintain and develop effective communication with the Company Members. Lead all Team Meetings, the Annual AGM and Staff training sessions as required. Maintain a clean and tidy work environment. Communication Maintain effective and respectful verbal and written communication with Board members, staff, Community members and external stakeholders at all times. Identify and deliver continuous improvement in service delivery in your role.

Other Duties: Manage any ad hoc projects. Other duties as required in the scope of the role.
